Whatever Italian leftist Gramsci wrote in prison, Davidson argues, they were the words of a man who for his entire adult life had been a socialist revolutionary. He draws on new documentation, primarily letters that have been published during the past 20 years, to clarify what his predicament, his feelings, and his changing solutions were. The new materials also suggest some changes to the order in which his notes should be read, he says, but for all that, they still must be read as those of a socialist who clearly saw himself as a Marxist.
